Silica

Silica (SiO₂), also known as silicon dioxide, is a naturally occurring compound found in sand, quartz, and other minerals. In industrial applications, precipitated silica and fumed silica are the most widely used synthetic forms.

Key Properties

  • White, fine powder – unlike Carbon Black, silica is white and non-staining

  • Reinforcing filler – improves mechanical properties of rubber compounds

  • Low rolling resistance – enhances fuel efficiency in tires

  • High surface area – improves strength and tear resistance in elastomers

  • Chemical inertness – resistant to many chemicals and high temperatures

Main Applications

  1. Rubber & Tire industry – as a reinforcing filler, especially in “green tires” to reduce fuel consumption and increase wet traction

  2. Plastics & Coatings – as a thickener, anti-blocking, or matting agent

  3. Adhesives & Sealants – improves rheology and durability

  4. Food & Pharma – used as an anti-caking agent in powders

  5. Electronics & Specialty – used in polishing slurries, insulation, and high-tech materials
